Join Fredericksburg Rescue Squad

Thank You for your interest in the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad (FRS).  Are you interested in a fufilling and rewarding experience? Are you ready to give back to your community? We hope that you decide to join our crew and are ready for a fun and challenging experience.  The following is information about the different types of memberships, what we will ask of you as a member of the FRS, what training you will need, and other information about joining.

Membership Types:

Active:
18 years or older. Must be certified as EMT-B or higher.  Required to run at least 32 hours a month.
Associate:
18 years or older. No certification required.  Must obtain either EMT or Emergency Vehicle Operations Course within on year.  Required to run at least 32 hours a month.
Junior Associate:

Age 16-17: No certifications required. Able to ride-a-long on calls. Not permitted to be at the station after 10:00 pm on school nights. Must maintain a "C" average in school. Required to run at least 20-hours per month.
Age 14-15: Same as above however, unable to ride-a-long due to liability issues.

Associate Driver:
Certified in EVOC & CPR. Required to run 32-hours per month. 18 years or older.
On - Call:
Must be certified as EMT-B or higher or as a driver.  Required to run at least 16 hours per month. 18 years or older.
Rescue Team:

"Water Rescue Team" - Open water certification required. Rescue Diver and Swift Water certifications also preferred. 18 years or older.

"Squad 20 Heavy Duty Rescue Team" -Vehicle extrication and EVOC 3 Certifications. Required to run 24-hours per month. 18 years or older.

 

What We Will Ask of You:

To be a full member, we ask you to volunteer by responding from our station to emergency calls for a minimum of 32-hours a month. 

You may make any combination of the following duties to equal your required hours:

Monday - Thursday: 

6-10PM and 10PM - 5AM
Friday: 6-10PM and 10PM - 7AM
Saturday: 7AM - 7PM and 7PM - 7AM
Sunday: 7AM - 7PM and 7PM - 5AM

We are always happy to work with your schedule to arrange any combination of 32-hours of duty. In additions to your required squad responsibilities during this time, you may study, paticipate in training, use the computer, watch TV or sleep while waiting to respond to emergencies from our station.

Training:

Our dedicated volunteers are of all ages, come from all walks of life and have different levels of training ranging from drivers to EMTs and Paramedics.  Many are certified in firefighting, hazardous materials operations, search & rescue, heavy rescue operations and scuba diving, just to name a few.  But don’t be intimidated, no experience is necessary; we offer free training to all of our members!

To become a permanent member of the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad, you must obtain your Emergency Medical Technician certification(EMT) and/or Emergency Vehicle Operation Course Certification (EVOC).

This means you can be a driver and/or an EMT.  EVOC classes are offered monthly, and can be completed in one weekend.  EMT classes are usually twice a week for three hours at night for five months, and are typically offered in the spring and fall.  After becoming certified, you will further train under qualified FRS perceptors..

There are three different levels of EMT training available:

    EMT-Basic (EMT-B):

Training in patient assessment, respiratory, cardiac, trauma management and transporting a patient to the hospital by ambulance.  Requires 110 hours of classroom training and ten hours of clinical training.

    EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I):

More advanced training in intravenous fluid administration, manual defibrillator usage, drug administration and advanced airway protection techniques.  Requires 160 additional hours of classroom training and 60 additional hours of clinical training beyond the EMT-B level.
EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P): The highest level of EMT training, detailed and expansive education in the topics highlighted at the EMT-I level.  Requires 450 hours of classroom instruction and 230 hours of clinical training beyond the EMT-B level.
Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC): The Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) consists of defensive driving training in both emergency and non-emergency situations.  Requires 8 hours of classroom training and 8 hours of practical exercises. 

By becoming a member of FRS, all of your training courses will be paid for.

How to Join:

To Join the volunteers of Fredericksburg Rescue Squad, please complete the application membership below and mail it to us at : FRS, 510 Williams St., Fredericksburg VA, 22401.

We will check your background and references. Upon favorable results, during our monthly business meeting (first Tuesday of each month) your application will be read and the membership will vote to accept you as a probationary period.

  If you are accepted, you will be notified and will then be scheduled to come in and receive your new member packet, meet your mentor, receive your uniform, view our units and tour the station. You will remain in a probationary status for a period of six months. After six months, our membership will vote to accept you as a fuu-time FRS member.
