What is a Samuel E. Perry Award? This prestigious award is named after our beloved Samuel E. Perry. To obtain a true understanding of this man and his dedication, please read the below Senate Joint Resolution No.226, February 6, 1998. This resolution is also proudly displayed at our station.
"Samuel E. Perry, who was lovingly nicknamed "Fredericksburg's Good Samaritan" died on August 19, 1992.
During his 87 years, Sam Perry came to be the living embodiment of public service and the spirit of volunteerism in the Fredericksburg community.
A 50-year member of the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad and a 70-year member of the Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department, Sam touched the lives of thousands of his fellow citizens, bringing some of them into the world and keeping many of them from leaving it prematurely.
Known to nearly everyone in our community by his trademark bow ties, warm smile, corny jokes and great heart, Sam was tireless in his service to his neighbors, answering as many 1,500 emergency calls per year well into his eighties.
Born in Spotsylvania and a lifelong resident of the Fredericksburg area, Sam retired after 42 years with the U. S. Postal Service in 1961.
Many of Sam's years were dedicated to service in the Fredericksburg Baptist Church as Sunday school superintendent, teacher, trustee and deacon.
In addition the countless hours and immeasurable energy devoted to the rescue squad and fire department, Sam also served for 37 years on the Fredericksburg City Council.
Recognition for Sam's extraordinary life of service extended beyond the boundaries of Fredericksburg when he was named a life member of the Virginia Association of Rescue Squads, a member of the Virginia Rescue Squad Hall of Fame and twice a recipient of the Governor's Award For Volunteering Excellence
Truly an irreplaceable part of the fabric of the Fredericksburg area, Sam's astonishing contributions give new and noble meaning to the term "public service."
